Beauty Clinic Feature | Chrysalis Clinics

I was fortunate to sit down with Louise, Founder & Director of Chrysalis Clinics, and have her share with us what inspires her, how she got to where she is today, what she thinks it takes to be successful in our industry today.

How did you get to where you are today? 

Graduating from the Joyce Block Institute in 1997, I was fortunate to secure my first job in one of their clinics, More Than Skin. This was a great platform for me; their professional systems and excellent training got me off on the right track. However, it was the work experiences in London where my career really developed.  From setting up a mobile business for a 5 Star Hotel Day Spa to becoming the Spa Coordinator at Elemis on Bond Street.

My big break was working for Urban Retreat in Harrods. Within a short time I was promoted to Beauty Therapy Manager, running a team of 80 staff and developing a range of 12 leading products.  This was a completely different challenge; working with large budgets, training and developing staff, whilst upgrading and launching new treatments onto the world stage. It was an exhilarating four years and while working alongside some of the biggest cosmetic companies I gained a valuable understanding of the retail industry.

When I came back to New Zealand in 2005 I worked for the Australasian distributors of Elemis.  My role was to investigate their top Spas in New Zealand and Australia; ensuring their therapist levels met their high standards and providing additional training if needed. It was a privilege to work within some of the most renowned resorts and spas in both countries. This experience allowed me to benchmark my new business idea against the best in the Industry. All of these invaluable experiences prepared me for what was to come and have had a significant influence on the Chrysalis we have today.
 
What does it take to be successful in the industry today? 

I feel it is important to look at where you want to be in the future and develop your business with this in mind. Having a strong ethical and service culture within the clinic and having backed it up with documented procedures and clear business structures will keep everyone on the same page and working towards the same goals.
 
What advice do you have for someone starting off new in the industry?     
 
It’s all about the right attitude and hard work, it is not an easy job but dedication and continually educating yourself will pay off and set you up for a great career.
 
What are the qualities you look for in a Chrysalis team member? 

I am always looking for the spark.  Someone who doesn’t want to settle for the norm but wants to be the best they can be in all they do.  Having an inner drive to succeed and the hunger to learn makes a huge difference from a good therapist to a great therapist.

How do you value and look after your team? 

Continual investment in their training so they stay passionate about their job, great commission systems so they are rewarded for their hard work and opening a bottle of bubbles at the end of a hard week never goes a miss.

That is a hard question to answer because it takes a lot of elements to run a good business. I have learnt that business is always a work in progress. Always knowing that our clients are the most important part of our business and ensuring we look after their needs from the moment they come in.

It is good team work that gives the overall impression to the client and feeling they are important to us and special, is always our goal. 
 
Where would you like to be in 2 years time? 

Chrysalis Browns Bay is still a new business, so getting that established and having a strong team is what I am working towards.  I may look at opening another salon but as I have a young family, life balance for both my business and family would be what I am aiming for in the next 2 years.
 
What is your mission statement- or value statement?

CHRYSALIS PHILOSOPHY
To truly care for our client’s wellbeing; Bringing peace, healing and strength to their everyday life.
All Chrysalis therapists are experts in the range of treatments they perform.
Skin diagnosis is what we do best.
Chrysalis therapists are sensory focused and are always grounded.


All of these elements together give the client the “ultimate experience” and long term results.
 
Did you seek advice, and who was your biggest inspiration? 

I am always open to advice.  At present I work with a business coach who helps keep me focused towards my end goals and helps me visualise the bigger picture within my business. 
My biggest inspiration in business and personal life is God. 
 
You are a real success and testimony to our industry, if thereis one thing that could sum up your success to date, what is it? 

Love what you do, never stop learning, surround yourself with like-minded people and remember you are just running a beauty clinic not the country so don’t get to wrapped up in the small stuff.
