Pia's Top ten tips for Total Skin Wellness

Written by Pia Kynoch on April 23rd, 2019.      0 comments

Pia’s top 10 tips for total skin wellness; Get gorgeous, glowing skin at any age!

#1 Cleanse Your Face Every Night!
One of the biggest mistakes you can make in your skincare routine is to fall asleep with your whole day on your face. Makeup, sweat, pollutants … your skin has been working hard for those 12hrs! Make it a habit to wash your face & follow your skincare routine every night before bed, and your skin cells will thank you! Well-formulated cleansers & toners smooth, soften, and calm skin, while removing the last traces of day and ensuring a clean canvas for your other skin care products. Better results WILL be seen!

#2 Always, Always, Always Wear SPF
Rain, hail or shine you need to protect your skin daily. UV accounts for up to 80% of skin ageing! Protect that beautiful face of yours. Reduce pigment. Reduce free radical damage. Reduce formation of lines! Look for products with zinc oxide for best protection and apply liberally. Many people don’t apply enough, which limits their protection factor.

#3 Start Using Eye Cream
Eyes truly are the windows to your soul, so you really want to ensure yours don’t end up being covered in drapes! Using an anti-aging eye cream at night is a great step to add to your skincare routine at any age - and then never stop. Eye wrinkles develop more quickly than other wrinkles, & this delicate skin needs specialised help from ingredients like CoQ10, meadow seed oil, hyaluronate and ceramides.

#4 Eliminate Wheat & Dairy
It could change your life forever! Do an experiment and eliminate both for four to six weeks and notice your skin glow, less bloating and tiredness and more vitality. These two are the top causes of inflammation for many individuals, and can contribute to many skin disorders and other inflammatory problems of the skin. Try almond milk and other grains such as quinoa as great alternatives!

FYI - The basic elimination diet is as simple as this:
No gluten, dairy, eggs, soy, fast food, or alcohol for 30 days. Yes, we know - it’ll require a little more thought and effort for grocery shopping and meal preparation.… and you are worth it. You could be saving yourself a lifetime of inflammation, illness, annoying skin symptoms, and in some cases, even life-threatening diseases.

#5 Decrease sugar intake
Sugar in all its dietary forms (corn syrup, cane sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, etc.) can create extensive damage to the skin. In fact, it will be damaging to all organ systems because excess sugar molecules attach themselves to collagen fibers (found everywhere in our bodies) and ultimately cause them to lose their strength and flexibility. We call these bonding attachments AGEs, or advanced glycosylation end products, and they are a huge contributor to the ageing process—from the skin to the brain—and can also be responsible for wrinkles, immune dysfunction, heart disease, cancer, diabetes. Replace those sugary foods with lots of veggies and some fruits that provide the antioxidants your skin loves,as well as fibres that support digestive health!

#6 Ditch toxic skin-care products
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) estimates 99% of personal care products contain more than one ingredient that has never been evaluated for safety. Scary! Some ingredients in products may actually cause inflammation and skin irritation, again potentially leading to more issues such as pigmentation, ageing, redness and acne. Look for no fragrances, mineral oils, parabens, sodium lauryl sulfates, amines, colours. Focusing on great ingredients both externally AND internally is a gamechanger!

#7 Ensure you're drinking enough water
Seems simple right? Well, most people are chronically dehydrated, which means your skin is dehydrated too. Ageing happens faster if you're dehydrated! A good rule of thumb is drinking 33mls per kilo of body weight. So you know you can hydrate internally, but what about externally? Yes you can! Choose topical actives such as hyaluronate, NMF and Laminaria to increase your epidermal and dermal hydration levels. Being hydrated will help you detox better, feel better, give you supple skin and help ward off wrinkles - win, win, win!.

#8 Feed your gut!
In your GIT there is meant to be an abundance of good guys, some helpful & necessary bacteria that significantly affect our nutrient levels, mood, sleep and ageing process. An overabundance of harmful bacteria, fungi and yeasts create a whole host of unwanted body responses, such as toilet disturbances, weight gain, fatigue, and depressed mental state. Our GIT microflora weigh in at about 3kg - they're a significant force to be reckoned with, and you need to get on side! Probiotics are live bacteria found in certain foods or supplements. Prebiotics come from indigestible fibers that the bacteria consume in our lower intestine. They both provide numerous health benefits.

#9 Clean Your Brushes
How often do you clean your brushes and sponges? Cosmetic contamination from the bacteria, yeast and fungus found in these beauty tools leads to inflammation or even several types of infections that range in severity from mild to serious. Clean yours in warm water, using a mild bar soap or brush cleaner, at least twice a month to prevent breakouts and maintain the health of your brushes and skin.

So we’re onto our very last top skin care tip - and this is the most powerfully acting one that you can work with, we guarantee. Commit to trying it for 30 days, and notice the pleasure you find in yourself. The love. The gratitude. The confidence.

#10 Give yourself daily facial love!
Use this simple technique to learn to be kind to your body and soul. Use simple facial and/or body massage movements along with words of acceptance, courage and hope and literally watch your best self blossom and your greatest life unfold!
Self love and self compassion are vital to your overall well-being and life satisfaction, & every little bit counts. By reframing your inner dialogue to be more encouraging and supportive, your heart will feel open and you’ll feel nurtured, helping you love and nurture those around you even better than before also. Our brains and bodies have evolved to produce happy hormones (which lower stress hormones!) as a response to a gentle, warm touch - and this happens even when the touch is our own.

Facial massage gives you the opportunity to increase the absorption of whatever product you’re using, so choosing the right product is important. I like to use Jojoba, Rosehip, Avocado, Grape Seed or Macadamia Nut Oils as they are incredibly delicious for the skin! Begin by applying a small amount of oil onto a perfectly cleansed face. Vary between deep, stimulating motions or light, caressing ones to see what you prefer!
During the entire massage sequence find words that you would like to say out loud. Some examples are;
“I thank you, skin, for protecting me”
"My body deserves love and respect."
“I choose to feel better”
“I love my eyes/eyelashes/lips/nose/cheeks/jaw”
“I choose to look after myself”
“I am confident”
“I know with time and effort I can achieve anything”
“I am trusting myself and know my life is unfolding beautifully”
“I feel renewed/restored”
“My body is my vehicle in life; I choose to fill it with goodness”
“My wellness is my priority. I take my relationship to my body seriously and am finding loving it to be so empowering”

Begin your massage sequence by placing your fingers between your brows and slide them up your forehead, moving to the right and then to the left, repeating several times. Try different pressure variations as you say your affirmations.
Slide your fingertips down your temples to sweep under your eyes and across your upper cheeks, and nose.
Pressing more firmly, work into your TMJ (the muscle you can feel when you open your jaw or clench your teeth), then do alternating circles across your lip, mouth and chin.
Slide across your jaw line onto your neck, gently using vertical strokes either from the collarbone upward or jawline down.
Now lightly tap across every single aspect of your beautiful face, everywhere that you have already worked, repeating your affirmations.
Finish by cupping your face and taking 5 really long, deep, intentional breaths, imagining a soft, loving, healing energy emanating from your hands.
