Laser & IPL Transgender protocols
As professionals offering hair reduction in a modern age, you are likely to come across transgender clients seeking hair removal. These are clients who were born as males but who now seek to live as females, this group may also include people born as males but with some female genitalia, or those who have chosen to identify as female. Should your laser or IPL technology be suitable to conduct these treatments, you may appreciate some tips and guidance from our experience.

So, you’ve been involved in the Laser or IPL industry for a while and you know how to do treatments, maybe your role has become a tad predictable and you feel you have more to give? – You may be able to train to become a laser safety officer. (LSO)
There is regulation in place in New Zealand where the role of a supervisor trained to oversee safety, auditing, maintenance and reporting of incidences relating to laser is required. The Auckland Council Health & Hygiene bylaw 2013, in place since 1st July 2014, is under currently under review and discusses the role of the Laser Safety Officer when and where it references the relevant Australian and New Zealand safety standards. |

What is Plasma - our unbiased overview of the latest skin technology craze
Technologies arrive on the market in New Zealand and we snap them up frequently without looking into safety profiles, indicated and registered uses, or classification of the devices which can scar, burn and traumatise our clients. We watch a Youtube video or two, we listen to the spiel from the sales rep and then we get started with the training from the supplier. What could possibly go wrong? |

Beauty operators – trained, qualified, or not are healthcare providers
Whether you realise this or not, you are in fact recognised and therefore held accountable as a healthcare provider under section 3(k) the Health & Disability Commissioner (HDC). If a member of the public presents for treatment at your clinic (be it home-based, franchised, internationally owned, or a privately-owned professional setting) the treatments they undertake are health care services. |

Although sometimes we think that there are too many rules and regulations,
and that we live in a risk-averse society, prescriptive health and safety rules over the manufacture of electrical and other potentially hazardous equipment used in the workplace are necessary to protect staff and clients/patients. The purpose of this article is to clarify the role of regulation and standards and considers the importance of education and guidelines used in aesthetic practice. |

How to implement your new found knowledge back at the clinic
The excitement of earning a new certificate can bring temporary reward to the recipient who has now completed some professional development, gained a few pearls of wisdom and hopefully mastered or refined a new skillset, so what now? |

Moving the industry in the right direction with the right ideas lead by the right people
The concept of bringing a medical education quality assessment tool to the New Zealand beauty industry was first presented by Ruth Nicholson (from NZ Laser Training) to the NZ Association of Registered Beauty Professionals (formerly known as NZ Association of Registered Beauty Therapists) in 2015. The verdict at the time was that it was still vaguely understood and would be challenging to implement without substantial debate and monitoring – but overall it was thought to be beneficial for the industry. |

IPL Breakthrough for white hair or dark skin!
Traditional hair removal has relied on the chromophore of the hair follicle to absorb the energy of the IPL or laser to destroy the hair papilla. Basically, it was reliant on colour.
White, blonde, grey and red hair reduction with IPL’s and Laser’s just wasn’t possible. Until recently...

Yep. I said it…..Laser doesn’t fix the cause.
It simply removes evidence.
It ‘s like mopping up a leak from a tap… But not fixing the leak. You’ll always have to keep mopping up!!! |

Revealing the "shonky" side of Beauty Suppliers.
Kiwis are very trusting people, with our ‘she’ll be right’ attitude. Every business owner wants to take suppliers at face value, ensuring their hard earned money is being invested wisely in the equipment they are about to buy. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if there was a guarantee that your decision was a good one? Is there even such a thing as a good investment these days?

Are you qualified to perform IPL?
In light of recent cases raised in the media regarding IPL burns to a client’s face following a treatment session by a beauty therapist, we are reminded about the fact it is not actually the length of time the training is undertaken but the quality and contents of the training conducted.
