Summer Skin Detox!
Summer Detox - Spa & Beauty Articles

I’m quite sure that you have either heard about or done a detox at some stage – the concept of eliminating toxins, cleansing your internal systems and revitalising your body and mind is not a new one… and we have some nifty ideas to help your skin do the same thing!

Your skin is largest organ, your greatest protector, and is affected every second of every day by its external surroundings and your internal supporting networks. What you choose to put into your body, apply to it and expose it to will really determine its (and your!) overall health and wellness.

Signs that you may need a skin detox include:
  • Dull, sallow skin—this may indicate dehydration, and an overworked kidney & liver
  • Age spots—these reflect negative cell changes created by oxidative stress and DNA damage
  • Adult acne—though many adults have acne at various times in their lives, if you’re noticing a flare-up it may be that stress and exhaustion are taxing your waste-elimination processes. Your skin immunity may be a little low, making it easier for infection to be present.
  • Wrinkles and sagging skin—though these are signs of normal skin ageing, environmental exposure (inferior products, perfumes, UV etc) will really increase signs of ageing! A lack of proper skin nutrients will also create extra sagging.
  • Oily, red, itchy, or scaly skin—signs that your skin is unhappy and needs some help!
Help your mind and body revitalise and reset with these eight steps:
  1. Sleep! If you’re not getting enough your body will have significantly higher levels of inflammatory enzymes and cytokines (cellular messengers) that interfere with your repair and rebuilding mechanisms, contributing to faster ageing. Aim to hit the sheets an hour earlier each night and look better for it!
  2. Use one of our Riffi Sisal Dry Body brush to maintain your overall health & well-being. The investment in dry skin brushing is small – but the pay-off is large. If you've never tried it, you're likely to be pleasantly surprised! Benefits include stimulating lymphatic and blood circulation, exfoliation and reduction of cellulite. Use it at least once a day to really get your skin glow happening!
  3. Limit your exposure to Electromagnetic fields (EMFs)! Increased EMFs exposure can modify our cellular balance by generating reactive oxygen species – those super pesky buggers that age you super fast… the faster we are ageing the quicker our cells break down which causes many weird and unwanted things to happen! Our tips - sleep with your phone well away from your head, limit your use of headphones and turn of WiFi when you are not using it.
  4. Enjoy soaking in a bath! This is one of the oldest forms of therapy, perfect for relieving a tired mind and a tired body. Light your all natural Salus candle, turn off the lights, pour in some Dermaviduals Tenfione bath oil containing natural olive and avocado oils plus antioxidants and hop in! Tenfione makes for an amazing dry skin soak or a perfect skin conditioning oil application immediately after your bathing routine. An incredible treatment for super dry skin, sensitive skins, eczema and psoriasis sufferers, and for babies! We also highly recommend jumping into your bath after cleansing and applying your Dermaviduals Peeling Cream, for noticeably awesome face and neck exfoliation and skin softening benefits.
  5. Exercise gets your blood pumping and your skin sweating, helping to cleanse toxins from your body and get your skin shining with health. Try your favourite exercise at least five times a week, and as well as looking radiant you’ll help manage weight, improve muscle and bone strength and improve your mood! Exercise stimulates a whole host of anti-oxidant activity in your body, with ongoing benefits proven with even a 30min workout at 70% capacity. We all have time for that!!
  6. Drink more water – nope, no news breaker here, we’ve all heard it before! Yet this is a very underrated skin boosting activity that not enough people do well. If you struggle with your water intake then why not sip more organic Love Teas: nettle, ginger, dandelion and green tea are known to help calm inflammation, improve liver and kidney function and speed up toxin removal. Drink at least two cups of these tea blends a day– it is addictive, and healthy! Love Teas have blends for pregnancy, breastfeeding, sleeping and more… of course we love the Skin Glow blend a lot!
  7. Alkalise your life! Calcium, magnesium, potassium, boron and iron are classified as alkaline minerals and are found in abundance in most fruits, green vegetables, peas, beans, lentils, spices, herbs, seeds and nuts. These minerals are essential for skin, hair and nail health! Reduce your intake of acidifying foods such as meat, fish, poultry, eggs, grains, and legumes will ensure your skin health continues to improve!
  8. Always read the ingredient list of everything you are applying to your skin! From your shower wash to your SPF, to your make-up, exfoliator, serums and moisturising creams, please do take note of what is in there. There are often many hidden nasties that are creating a whole lot of havoc inside where you just can’t see. Just because a product looks or feels or smells nice does not mean it is nice! Things to avoid are ParabensPhthalatesSodium Lauryl Sulfates, Mineral Oil (liquid parrifinum) and Parfums. When you eliminate synthetics and toxic ingredients from your skin care routine your skin will naturally improve.
