What exactly is CIT and why is it so successful?
Collagen Induction Therapy is a proven skin rejuvenation treatment.
It helps restore and increase the skin’s natural regeneration of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid without the risk of side effects sometimes associated with other treatments such as laser or IPL.
The treatment is minimally invasive, recognized worldwide as highly effective for the management of various skin conditions, especially photo-aged skin, wrinkles, enlarged pores and scarring.
It is successful because the deliberate, controlled trauma stimulates the natural physiologic healing process. It essentially opens the door for products to enter below the skin surface and work from within. CIT is a long-term treatment which repairs skin and maintains optimal skin health when combined with corneotherapeutic skin nutrients.
Short needles are used to gently stimulate the skin cells to release their own substances for repair and enable increased absorption of products and active ingredients to support skin cell function from the inside out.
How does CIT work?
As the needle breaks the skin’s surface, the protective healing response is triggered.
Capillaries dilate to allow clotting factors (platelets) to enter the injured tissue. Platelets release growth factors which emit cytokines (chemical signals) into surrounding tissue to attract further immune cells like neutrophils and macrophages. These cells migrate to the site of injury releasing a cascade of growth factors and cytokines to stimulate new blood vessel development. This in turn stimulates fibroblast proliferation and significantly boosts collagen and elastin production.
The tiny micro-channels in the skin caused by the hair fine needles will close within minutes. Thus the skins protective upper layer remains uncompromised.
Remodelling and realignment of the new collagen will increase substantially after three weeks. It takes about 3 to 6 months for the full effect of the treatment to be evident, depending on the client’s age and lifestyle.
How frequently should a clinical needling be performed?
Clinical needling (o.5 mm, 1.o mm) should be performed no more than every 4 weeks. The reason for this is because of collagenase activity (enzyme degrading collagen). Collagenase peaks on the first day of injury and again around day
14. If stimulated too frequently, it will compromise the collagen synthesis and remodelling. Adequate healing time is essential for creating natural collagen.
A minimum of 3 – 6 treatments is required for skin rejuvenation. Results will vary, depending on client age and lifestyle. When the course of treatments has finished, maintenance treatments are recommended every 3 - 6 months.
How does the derma CIT pen work?
The derma CIT pen uses 9 very fine, stainless steel needles in a disposable cartridge that vertically pierce the skin. These diminutive vertical incisions create minor trauma which encourages the skins own natural healing response.
The hand-piece has a dial to adjust the needle depth. This customises the treatment according to the client’s skin condition. Adjustable needle depth is between 0.2 mm to 2.5 mm. Needle depth beyond 1 mm can only be used by medical doctors.
The high speed (8500 rpm) of the vertical needle movement enables a pain free treatment.
What are the derma CIT pen benefits?
The derma CIT pen stimulates skin regeneration and helps to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, improves skin tone, texture and firmness. Overall, the result is a more youthful skin and glowing complexion.
The treatment also assists in breaking down scar tissue to encourage further healing. It is the ideal treatment for acne scars and helps to improve stretch marks and surgical scars significantly.
The pen is easy to operate, especially around delicate facial contours. This allows for fast and precise handling, making the treatment procedure more relaxed for the client as well as the therapist.
Due to advanced technology of the derma CIT pen, the procedure is much more comfortable compared with conventional roller treatments. Clinical roller treatments can be painful because of the low speed and pressure of the needles. The technology of the pen allows the hair-fine needles to enter vertically in and out of the skin with high speed which distract the pain receptors. Therefore it’s pain free and without downtime.
In addition, it is much safer to use than a needle roller. There is no risk of accidental injury to the client’s eyes or therapists hands. Importantly, there are no visible needles as they are all retracted inside the cartridge.
Therapists find they are much more confident when using the derma CIT pen.
Another benefit to the therapist is the lower cost of consumables which allows for a higher return on investment.
Are there any risks?
In general no – CIT has proven its safety and effectiveness for all skin types. However, as with all treatments, there are certain contraindications; for those with auto immune diseases and cancer patients. Rosacea and Couperosis also have to be treated with caution. In the end, the success of any treatment depends on the level of training and education of the operator of a device. Don’t purchase any modality without proper training.
A big and unpredictable risk can be the products used post treatment! Not all products are suitable to use with CIT. The procedure allows for up to 80% more product absorption than just applying actives to the skin surface. It is essential for the overall success of the treatment to only use products free of sensitizing agents such as fragrance, preservatives, emulsifiers and colours.
And a major rule for all is to avoid sun exposure post treatment at all costs.
Working to educate a new generation of engaged and inspired skin treatment therapists
Skin treatment therapists these days need to be informed across so many areas: products, technology and research to name a few, and it can be difficult to know where to turn for advice. With a plethora of needling devices flooding the market, and a good deal of misinformation fostering less than optimal practices and results, Derma Aesthetics provides world class education and products based on leading scientific evidence. We are very aware that our profession can quickly lose credibility in the eyes of the public and authorities if best practice procedures aren’t followed.
Rather than training skin treatment therapists purely to sell more product, Derma Aesthetics works alongside internationally acclaimed experts, such as Florence Barrett-Hill, Margaret Walsh, and Dr Lance Setterfield, to ensure best practice and to train the next generation of engaged and inspired therapists.
Derma Aesthetics is also leading the way in creating brand new, healthy, younger looking skin, through its dermaviduals range and the newly released dermaCIT pen for Collagen Induction therapy.
dermaviduals is a truly customised skin care range developed by leading German scientist Dr Hans Lautenschlaeger. The product formulations are based on the principles of corneotherapy and target maintenance of the natural skin barrier and the prevention of premature ageing in particular. dermaviduals products stand out as they are customised to the needs of the individual – designed by a qualified skin treatment therapist, following a professional skin assessment. Active ingredients, proven in clinical testing to penetrate through the skin barrier, are combined with base creams that mimic the skin.
The dermaviduals range is also free from emulsifiers, preservatives, fragrances, mineral oils, silicones, dyes and amines, leading to improved overall health of the skin and better results in skin correction.
|Derma Aesthetics are trusted experts in Collagen Induction Therapy, the only rejuvenation treatment to maximise penetration of essential cell nutrients, and the release of growth factors associated with the positive aspects of wound healing, simultaneously. One of this modality’s major advantages is that it eliminates the risk of melanocyte heat injury and actually optimises cell function, making it the ideal treatment for all skin types.
Derma Aesthetics conduct comprehensive education classes focusing on the complete modality of CIT.
