|Rachel Starr previously ran her own company in a different field (wedding planning website) before training as a Beauty Therapist. She loves being independent, working for herself and being her own boss, so working for someone else was not an option. She set up her clinic "Beauty Boudoir" after she qualified and started practicing on willing friends.
She shares: "I think you have to have a bit of business savvy and marketing knowledge is a plus. I worked in advertising for many years so I understand how to spread the word about my business in an economical way. Advertising costs far too much and the first year is already heavily laden with expenses and risks."
Her advice to anyone considering opening their own clinic is to "start small, just with the treatments you feel confident with and get great products.
I have added to my skills and training over the year so that I can offer more services.
Rachel reflects "just waiting for something to happen was hard, it seemed at first that I was going to fail. In the beginning I was giving a lot away for nothing, and getting very little back; but through regular contact with clients (always have clients fill out a consultation form or card to record their details to send them specials and updates) things started to happen. By being creative with my specials and making sure my treatments are luxurious and special, most of them have come back and some of them have become regulars."
Rachel spent a lot of time testing products to find ones that she loves and that are proven effective. She finally decided to use Vagheggi skin care, which is not that well known. However she loves the product because it is so delicious and works so well. She also stocks Bella Vi range of mineral makeup that she uses herself everyday because she says "it is so gorgeous on the skin and makes my face youthful and glowing". Rachel continues: "All my products are used by me personally as I only want to offer what I use and love!"
|Her Clinic "Beauty Boudoir" is based from her home in New Windsor, Auckland. "It is a lovely classy place to come, my clients say, and I have spent a lot of time and money making it look stunning with a very Boudoir (French for dressing room I believe) look."
When asked what her future plans are, Rachel shares: "Within the next five years time I hope my appointment book is full all the time and that I may be in the position to hire another therapist to help bring different treatments for me to be able to offer. Someone who understands, it's all about the client and making her feel beautiful, and adding that little bit of lovely to her day. I love it when I hear clients say 'that was amazing' or 'I'm going to tell everyone about you'.
That lets me know I am on the right track."
