Q & A with Rachel Robertson

Written by Nadia McCracken on June 18th, 2014.      0 comments

1. How did you get to where you are today?
With a lot of help and determination. I really think you need to be passionate about what you do, I don't see this as my “job”, it's my career, passion and hobby all rolled into one. I've had lots of help and support over the years from wonderful mentors and role models. People like Flo Barrett-Hill who has been a constant source of inspiration, along with the likes of my old business mentor Karen Lynch. But I have also learnt to put myself out there as well, you don't achieve recognition until you do.

2. What does it take to be successful in the industry today?
Like I mentioned you really have to be passionate, it's a lot of hard work – not the “glamorous” industry that some girls think they are getting into. You also need to continue to educate yourself, one of the things I love the most about this industry is that fact that it is always changing. Post Graduate training is an absolute must, clients are more savvy, so you need to be up to date with all the latest changes and research.

3. What advice do you have for someone starting off new in our industry?
Get yourself into a learning environment. Don't just take the first job that comes along, look at what support and training your employer is going to offer you. I was lucky in my first job, one of my colleagues was a CIDESCO examiner, I learnt so much from her in my first few years.

4. What inspired and prompted you to create Prologic?
With my background and understanding of the skin along with cosmetic chemistry, I really wanted to create a product that had an affinity and bio mimetic resemblance to our skins natural composition. I really felt there was a gap in the market for a professional NZ product range created for the skin concerns we see so commonly in the Southern Hemisphere. There is such a range of amazing ingredients at our disposable, yet many companies formulate the old fashioned way with lots of emulsifiers, chemical preservatives and parabens – this was not my goal. I wanted to formulate as clean as possible.

5. Looking at your Prologic journey, what was your biggest challenge?
I think the biggest challenge has been formulating in NZ and as a start out company. It is very expensive to formulate here, but the end result is amazing. You have all the control with quality of ingredients and the controlled environment of the laboratory, it’s just a matter of getting that story across to therapists and clients. As a start out company EVERYTHING costs more, until you are able to manufacture at higher quantities the cost per unit is very high. But I have stuck true to my vision of formulating in NZ and producing an exceptional high quality product.

6. What advice do you have for anyone aspiring to create their own product line?
Have a strong vision and stick to it, there are so many products on the market. You need to have a USP, to have a story behind the brand. Don’t compromise on standards, it will effect your end result.

7. Where would you like to be in 2 years time?
I would like to see Prologic in 50 clinics throughout NZ. We are already exporting to the USA, so I would like to expand the brand there – while looking at the European market. To be continuing to give back to an industry that has given me so much. I love sharing my experiences with others and plan to do more public speaking and training seminars.

8. What is your Mission statement or Value for Prologic?
Real ingredients, Real Results. No cheap fillers, just pharmaceutical grade effective ingredients.

9. What inspires you?
I have quite a competitive nature, so I think striving to be the best I can be is what continues to allow me to push the boundaries and myself. Also to create something that really makes a difference, I love doing photographic before and after case studies with Prologic – seeing the changes is the rewarding part. My children also inspire me, I want them to grow up seeing me build something, achieve and be successful.

10. You are a real success and testimony to our industry, if there is one thing that could sum up your success to date, what is it?
Passion and a true love for the industry.
