The Perception of Beauty Therapists

Do you see yourselve as a Skin and Body Care Provider?
The old days of being a “Beautician” or "Beauty Therapist" is long gone. Today our clients expect expert advice from us with anything and everything to do with their skin and body – that includes ageing, skin care, cellulite, makeup, general body well-being and stress management. Clients expect to leave their treatment with a prescription from you as to how they can best achieve their desired result.
As a skin care and spa professional, you should always know what your client wants before they know it themselves. Take the time to get to know your client and understand what their goals are. Know and understand your products intimately; and educate your client. Never rush through your consultation - it's an essential part of your treatment. Make notes, keep a good record, and remember that it's not just what you do once a month in the clinic or spa that matters - it is as important what your client does twice a day EVERY day. Start looking at home care products as your client's prescription that will get the expected results.
It is imperative that clients understand the ingredients included within their products as well as the ingredients they should stay away from. This means WE have to know these ingredients, and the effects they have on the skin. Become an expert. Education is key! Find yourself a mentor in the industry & surround yourself with great support system.
Spend time with every client and build a plan. Establish the end goal and strategically plan the treatment programme to best reach that goal with her/him. Whether your client’s goal is healthier, radiant skin; stress reduction or pretty feet, you should always have a future plan of how you will assist her/him in that goal. Your rebooking and retail recommendation needs to always be in line with that plan. Every time your client visits, the plan and goal should be revised. Measure your progress, assess the plan and prescribe accordingly.
So if you are not already seeing yourself as a “Skin and Body Expert”, start doing so from today! Learn something new every day. Never be afraid to ask for help. Find your role models and learn from those more experienced than you. And most importantly, have fun and enjoy this amazing industry we are in!
